Whether your child is above the recommended age or below today we will be discussing it all in hopes to help you decide whether buying them a hoverboard is a good idea or not?
(Maybe you’ll even end up buying one for you to play with!)
Without further adieu, let’s get started!
Hoverboard Age Requirement
So if you are looking for the quick answer and don’t have time to read through the whole article we will get straight to the point!
How old do you have to be to ride a hoverboard?
The “official” hoverboard age requirement set for most hoverboards is 8 years old and up.
With that said, that is the “official” requirement set with most companies and does not include ALL hoverboards on the market let alone decide for you whether your child (who may be under 8) should or shouldn’t ride. It also should be noted that this does not include the legal side of things which come into play when you want to take your hoverboards to the streets.
Now why is the recommended age set to this? Well simply, most children under 8 are either not physically ready to jump on a hoverboard just yet, or are not mentally ready to do so.
A child should both be able to balance with cognitive strength, and understand the risks of riding a hoverboard once they are able to do so.
Having said that, keep reading to find out when your child may be ready to ride a hoverboard, under 8 or not.
Regardless of any hoverboard age limit, there are some safety facts that you should consider before purchasing your child a hoverboard.
Firstly, hoverboards or “self balancing scooters”, this meaning, that they can be dangerous if not properly handled.
Child or not, nobody should ever ride a hoverboard without proper head, elbow, and knee protection. So if you are planning on buying your child a hoverboard, definitely plan on some gear as well!
For ages 5-8 the helmet we suggest is the Bell Rally Child Helmet
For ages 8-14 the helmet we suggest is the JBM Skateboard Helmet
As for both elbow and knee protection we recommend the JBM’s 3 in 1 Protective Set
All 3 can be found on amazon!
So can my child <8 ride a hoverboard?
So now that we talked a little bit about safety let’s dive in and figure out if your child over or under 8 is ready for their own hoverboard!
The first thing that you are going to want to consider is: is your child displaying a good amount of maturity?
Owning and driving a hoverboard is definitely no small task and involves lots of learning (and falling) before it can be perfected. Yes it’s true that some can just hop on and rock it but in most cases it is going to take a healthy amount of falling before it’s gotten right!
Especially if your child is going to be riding their hoverboard outside of your home and possibly in the streets it’s very important that they make mature decisions and know where they can go and where they can’t go.
Usually by the age of 8 most children do understand the dangers of riding a bike or skateboard and should not have much trouble displaying similar maturity when it comes to hoverboards.
If you ask us, the answer is quite simple, if you think they are ready, they are ready!
(And who knows, even if they are not you might end up enjoy riding yourself!)
The second thing that you will want to consider is: how good is your child’s balance?
While it is true that hoverboards are self balancing scooters, it is important to note that especially in the beginning, keeping your balance on one will be difficult.
Even for grown adults the first few times on a hoverboard are an experience that you have not felt before and end up falling from. Don’t worry, falling is just a natural step in the learning phase, but better balance for sure equals less falling.
The last thing to consider is: are you ready as a parent?
Especially if your child is <8 do you personally feel that they are ready to ride a hoverboard? If the answer is yes then by all means go out and get one! If the answer is no, then give it a few years and over time you will see that they will grow up, mature, and at one point be ready to ride one.

In Depth Review
If you are looking for a hoverboard that is both perfect for beginners and gives the ability to expand on then Swagtron’s Swagboard is the perfect fit for you!
Swagtron in the past years has come out with multiple iconic models that we believe are perfect for kids and adults alike. Starting off the T1 model which we are reviewing here is their latest and greatest, featuring a UL2272 certified board with a Sentry Shield™ battery. Pretty much just a fancy safe battery which encases the physical battery in aluminum making it impossible to catch fire (and spread).
The board also comes with silicon wheel arch scratch protectors giving a new layer of protection in case you decide to do tricks with this bad boy!
One awesome thing about Swagtron’s T1 is the “learning” ability it comes with. This gives it an edge over its competition to allow an ease into learning for all new riders. The learning mode softens the response from the hoverboard allowing for a more smooth transition while getting on and off your board. The Swagron T1 may not be the fastest or shiniest hoverboard on the market, but it is one thing for sure. A beginner friendly hoverboard. So if you are a beginner, or know a beginner wanting to start hoverboarding then this is a no brainer choice.
In conclusion we can conclude that it really does not matter if your child is 5, 6, 7 or 8+, if you believe that they are ready and up for the hoverboarding task, by all means, there is no reason not to! Hoverboarding is a fun sport and should be enjoyed by everybody, so if you do end up purchasing a hoverboard for your child definitely pick one up for yourself and enjoy the sunny afternoons hoverboarding with your kids!
